Assertive Communication

People often struggle with finding the balance between passive and aggressive communication. Assertive communication is strong, open, tactful – and effective. Participants will explore the theory and practice of assertive behaviour and communication. Participants will practice skills for communicating clearly with coworkers, family and peers to express what they feel, what they need and how it can be achieved. Building Consensus: Collaborative Decision Making for Groups

Building on Leading Meetings, participants will practise skills to implement a consensus process in groups. Participants will explore the benefits and challenges of consensus-based decision making. Topics include definition and principles of consensus, a consensus-building model and guidelines for implementation. (Prerequisite: Leading Meetings)

What do you do when coworkers, friends and family ask you for support in their conflicts? In this course, participants learn how to provide support to others experiencing conflict while maintaining appropriate boundaries. Communication at Work

Discover how to bring out the best in yourself and others! By understanding your personal communication style and how it interacts with others, you can create a positive, productive workplace. Participants will assess their natural strengths and how their communication style changes under stress. Participants must fill out a communication inventory in advance and bring it with them to the course.

Culture & Conflict

Conflict is universal – how we deal with conflict is not. In this course, participants learn how to recognize the cultural elements in conflict and gain a framework for working in cross-cultural settings. “Culture” in this course is broadly defined and includes ethnicity, social and economic status and gender. Dealing with Anger

$418 – 2 days

Conflict often brings out intense and sometimes frightening emotions, particularly anger. This course addresses anger in conflict. Participants increase their self- awareness and explore ways to manage their own anger and respond to others’ anger. Please note: This is not an anger management course. (Prerequisite: Intro to Conflict Resolution: Difficult People)

Dealing with Bullies

$209 – 1 day

Participants gain an understanding of bullying behaviours and strategies to deal with bullying effectively and respectfully. This course focuses on bullying at work; however, the concepts and strategies apply to bullying in any situation.

Dealing with Change

$209 – 1 day

This workshop will discuss the dynamics, stages and forces of change. Exploring your personal style in the face of change, anticipating change and the importance of being prepared all contribute to the outcome of your situation. You will learn how best to initiate and communicate change to minimize resistance and help yourself and those around you accept, adapt and commit to changes taking place in organizations, workplaces and communities.

Dealing with Power

Communicating effectively requires an understanding of power – how it works and how it is used and misused. Participants will work through case studies to develop skills to recognize hidden and open displays of power. Effective Negotiation Skills

Negotiation is a process, a means to an end. The process or “how we get there” can affect the success of negotiation dramatically. This workshop will explore the concept of interest-based negotiation. It will help you develop crucial communications skills and strategies for successful negotiation. You will also use a preparation form that greatly enhances your ability to be an effective negotiator using a Negotiation Style Profile built on the Harvard Negotiation Model.

Emotional Intelligence

Introduction to Mediation: Building a Foundation for Practice

This engaging two-day workshop serves as a primer for all other courses related to mediation. It is designed to build a core foundation of knowledge about the wideranging understanding of the practice of mediation in the 21st century Canadian context. It will also work at challenging and reinforcing one’s world view and its connection to the philosophies which guide this practice. Participants will explore the different philosophies, definitions, practices and models currently used. In doing so, a larger field of vision will be revealed, allowing learners to carefully assess their own context and make informed, intelligent choices in planning their future mediation training path.

Leading Meetings

Do you struggle with how to lead productive and focused meetings? Participants will learn how to facilitate meetings that are open, effective and collaborative. Topics include processes and frameworks for collaborative problem solving and decision making, using the skills of the people around the table and managing the experience and dynamic of meetings.

Managing Unresolvable Problems

Long-standing challenges at work may be due to competing needs (polarities): team vs. individual; competition vs. collaboration; action vs. planning. Polarities often cannot be resolved; however, they can be managed to achieve productive, effective resolutions. Mediation Practice

Practice makes perfect! In this course, you will practise concepts, models and skills from other mediation courses. Participants complete longer role-plays and are video- taped to review the role-play in depth with an experienced mediator. Focused, small group tutorials reinforce core skills and concepts.

Mediation Skills 1: For Organizational Consultants

Participants will be introduced to a comprehensive model for conducting interpersonal mediation in the role of an outside professional consultant. A process that typically unfolds over a period of weeks and months will be explored intensively over three action-packed days. Experienced mediators will provide coaching and feedback along the way.

Mediation Skills 2: For Organizational Consultants

This course builds on the mediation skills learned in the Level 1 course. Participants will enhance their skills in the context of challenging case studies. Additional frameworks and skills related to screening and assessment and for addressing a host of other challenges that inevitably arise in the course of mediation will also be explored. Experienced mediators provide coaching and feedback throughout the course.

Mediation Skills for Leaders

*Required for the Leadership Skills Certificate

Mediating at Work is taking leadership to the next level by proactively and effectively addressing conflict. Managers, supervisors, elders and community members of all kinds are faced with helping people in conflict every day. When coaching individuals to address conflict on their own has not been successful, facilitating a mediation session between them is often the next natural step. This highly engaging, intensive 3-day workshop provides participants with frameworks and skills to facilitate a mediation session between two people with whom they have a relationship and where there is vested interest in the outcome of the conflict.

It is recommended that you attend Introduction to Mediation: Building a Foundation for Practice prior to attending this course; however, it is not a requirement.

Stress Management

Stress and conflict are directly linked and both need to be managed on a day to day basis. This workshop will explore the causes of stress and how different responses to stress can help or hinder our personal health, work performance and with quality of our relationships. Using a variety of tools, this session will focus on awareness and action for effectively managing stress both in and outside the workplace.

Transforming the Argument

Participants develop skills to transform exchange from the clash of opposing demands (positions) to building on underlying interests. Participants will learn how to analyze common, different and incompatible interests and explore ways to use their analysis to resolve disagreements and transform relationships.
